The Everyday Storytellers - Week 6 by Jill Andrews-Dudas

From day one, Will has always been happy and easy going. He was the most content baby I’ve ever met. Aside from the occasional onset of four year old emotion, Will is full of joy. He wakes up each morning with the biggest smile on his face and is so lovely to be around.

On Friday, Will drew a picture for his cousin Otto, who was visiting from Vancouver. He insisted on putting his creation in an envelope to protect it from the rain. We got in the car and he proudly clutched the envelop in his hand. I got about a minute or two into our drive when I looked back in the mirror and knew this moment was one I wanted to remember. Since we were a few minutes early for our car appointment, I turned around, grabbed my camera and took a few pictures of Will in our driveway before heading on our way.

The Everyday Storytellers - Week 5 by Jill Andrews-Dudas

One of my hopes for this project was to share a glimpse into our daily lives and to push myself outside my comfort zone as a photographer. So this week, here’s a bit of real life. Imperfect lighting, mismatched outfits and Ava’s new favorite pastime. I love this very real moment of my kids in the backyard before bedtime.

9 Mothers/Photographers | 22 Children | 4 Countries | Documenting Childhood

Ava and I went on a quest for dandelions this week. We went to several different fields, trying to achieve a very specific image I had in mind. But this one ended up standing out to me in the end. I’ll admit the first frame in this series was definitely not a happy one (none of my children like laying on grass) but a quick game of peek-a-boo remedied any apprehension she had.

19 months is such a fun age. This image sums it up perfectly!

Document Your Days | Will's Haircut by Jill Andrews-Dudas

Sometimes I go for long periods of time without photographing any of my children. But each time I dust off my camera and bring it along (even to something as simple as a haircut), I’m reminded of how important it is to document your days.

It feels like each time I blink, another year passes. My children grow older and taller and wiser. One day I will wake up and all four of them will be grown, living lives of their own. It’s important to tell your children’s stories, it’s all they’ll have to look back on once they aren’t so little anymore.

Will had been asking for a haircut almost every day for months. Each time, my answer was the same.

“Maybe next week”…

But when my older son and husband went for a haircut and I saw how sad Will was, I knew it was time. We hadn’t cut Will’s hair since the beginning of August and it was beautiful, framing his little face so perfectly. The gentleman did such a wonderful job cutting his hair and Will was happy to be able to see again.
